The word purple apparently originated from the name of a dye from a shellfish called porphyra in Greek. The dye was rare and expensive and used for colouring the robes of Roman emperors and magistrates.
These days the expression "having a purple patch" is used to describe a time when things are going particularly well, although musical legend has it that there was once a People Eater of the same colour.
On the first of May, why not share your experience with the colour Purple by participating in our theme day?
