One of the challenges of photography is to catch the ephemeral: the brief moment that shimmers in light or shadow and just as quickly disappears. Ephemeral images haunt us in a glowing flash of sunrise, an indelible expression, passing shadows, or reflections that glaze and enliven an image. They are gone almost before we recognize them. This month's challenge is to find and share that instant we call "ephemeral."
This month's City Daily Photo theme comes from Kay at Sequim Daily Photo in Washington State. Sequim Daily Photo was begun in 2006 by "Lavender Lady" Norma, who posted for three years. Shannon posted for one year. Kay is the third Sequim Daily Photo blogger and has been posting since August 2011. She is a retired administrator with a background in environmental and noncredit community education. Her photographs and blogging express her varied interests and curiosity about the world around her.
Sequim is a small rural community on the Olympic Peninsula in western Washington. Adjacent to Olympic National Park, it is favored with recreational opportunities from hiking and biking to boating and fishing in nearby lakes and rivers or the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Native peoples lived in the region for thousands of years before western settlers arrived. In the mid-1800s farmers and loggers came.
The community today includes descendants of original native peoples and pioneers, farmers, and newcomers who have found in Sequim an ideal place to raise a family or retire. Scenic lavender fields share Sequim’s local landscape with traditional agriculture, housing, and a small commercial downtown center.
