<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As Jack Keane has discussed here in recent weeks, the CDP portal website is gone. The vendor that supplied the software gizmos that provided daily blog updates has terminated the service. The monthly themes that once attracted more than a hundred participants now interest only a couple of dozen. Many longtime CDP bloggers have left the arena. Others have migrated toward Instagram or elsewhere. Blogs are less often photographers' online medium of choice. And, the volunteers who have kept this thing going are themselves tired and distracted by other interests and responsibilities. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Yes, it is time. Time to pluck that which has been planted. This is the last new post on the CDP portal. It will stay up until it doesn't. This photo is the one that CDP's founder, Eric Tenin, posted on December 31, 2014, when he wrapped up ten years of Paris Daily Photo and signed off.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Facebook offers a "City Daily Photo" group page where many stalwart CDP members continue to post links to their daily photographic offerings. If you have not yet joined, take a look and see if that is where you can look (if you are a looker) or where you can post your photography (if you are a photographer and a poster).</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Let's thank Eric for stimulating so many of us to prowl our cities looking for people, places and things to photograph and celebrate. And let's thank Julie for taking up the reins after Eric for several years until health challenges sidelined her. And we all owe a big debt of gratitude to Peter for teaching himself the technology necessary to keep the portal up and running (and for paying the fees to maintain the domain and the various feeds). Not to mention the debt we owe Peter for years of applying the bandaids and bubblegum that kept the portal from falling apart in its waning years. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I'm Jack and it has been (mostly) fun for me to write a couple of news items each month and to come up with the monthly themes for several years. Recently I passed the tenth year since I retired from employment and ten years since I started my own CDP blog. Farewell! My grandchildren call. </div>Jackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03323811980627840654noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8332949539195589459.post-30401109056158475782020-08-18T04:30:00.045-05:002020-08-18T18:37:46.520-05:00The Last CDP Theme Day: A Favorite Photo <p style="text-align: justify;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9ogvd11LuabZGoma0BpDlwNO1r22316z-xpIB1vcSUt0x13e_RMEssviAeaoY1lV4UE79bVcf0Y93K-zX8cZct9r-rb23S2yBBO0ArFgFY4fiodNrgIVJz3A07KVVGSRL81nBhnUYEZk/s640/EE61825A-A4DA-48C4-94B4-E4E6323B68B9.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="426" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9ogvd11LuabZGoma0BpDlwNO1r22316z-xpIB1vcSUt0x13e_RMEssviAeaoY1lV4UE79bVcf0Y93K-zX8cZct9r-rb23S2yBBO0ArFgFY4fiodNrgIVJz3A07KVVGSRL81nBhnUYEZk/s0/EE61825A-A4DA-48C4-94B4-E4E6323B68B9.jpeg" /></a></div><p style="text-align: justify;">For years, the first day of each month has meant "Theme Day" to City Daily Photo bloggers. We have had colors for themes. Locations. Abstract thoughts. Numbers. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Well, September 1 will be the final Theme Day, so CDP bloggers are asked to look over their archives and show us a favorite image.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">This photograph of Megan combines three of my favorite things. First, for 40 years I have lived at least part of the year two blocks from Hartford, Connecticut's Elizabeth Park, where this photo was taken. Second, I like meeting complete strangers, learning a bit about them, and making portrait photos. (Megan's mother was in a photo club and Megan volunteered to be a subject for the club members . . . I sneaked in.) And, finally, I like beauty in all of its forms. and Megan had beauty in abundance.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">So, go find a favorite photo and show it to us on September 1. That will be a bittersweet time on two dimensions for me. It will close the book on the CDP portal, though CDP bloggers will continue posting on their blogs and will use other outlets like Facebook and Instagram to share their creativity. And, it is a week before the day when I close on the purchase of a new summer home in southwestern Connecticut and prepare to leave the house where my kids grew up. </p><p></p>Jackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03323811980627840654noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8332949539195589459.post-49681726915166120062020-08-03T14:30:00.002-05:002020-08-04T11:09:59.321-05:00Let's Appreciate Luis Gomez and One Photograph a Day<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Luis Gomez is a freelance photographer and photojournalist who moved to Washington, DC, in 2003 from Caracas, Venezuela. During his 35 years as a photographer, he has traveled the world collecting images for work and pleasure. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Luis is a longtime member of the City Daily Photo community and longtime publisher of his "One Photograph a Day" photo blog. How long? Who knows. The blog doesn't include information about its start. But, regular readers have come to enjoy his eclectic taste in photographs, and especially his tilted perspective. Good work, Luis. Keep 'em coming.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
What were we thinking? "City People?" The themes for 2020 are organized around viewing your city in a wide variety of aspects. When the monthly themes were chosen in late 2019, no one expected that a pandemic would empty city streets of people or that those found would be keeping away from others while masking their faces. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Don't you miss the days when we could sit in a crowd like this for n outdoor4 concert? Can you look at an image like this today without flinching at the absence of social distancing? Still, give it a try. Let's see what creative way you can come up with to show the people of your city. "City People" is the theme on August 1.</div>

For fifteen (repeat, FIFTEEN!!!) years, Linda Walcroft has been posting prolifically about the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in <i>The View From Squirrel Ridge.</i> She shows us old barns, country roads, city scenes, historic sites and the regional flora and fauna, interspersed with current and old family photographs. For Linda, the blog seems like in part a way to chronicle her region, in part a way to applaud, critique and bring attention to current local issues, and in part a way to create an online family journal. Whichever trail(s) she is traveling on a specific day's post, it is always interesting and entertaining.<br />
<br />
Linda's profile catalogs a varied career, including youth club organizer, secretary, administrative assistant, portrait photographer, technical writer, and webmaster. Now semi-retired, Linda spends a lot of time with her camera and computer. We are richer for her choices.</div>

A gem of Hartford, Connecticut, is Elizabeth Park, about one hundred acres of formal gardens, green space, recreational facilities, walking loops, and the Pond House Café. It is nationally known for its Rose Garden, the first municipal rose garden in the United States and the third largest rose garden in the country today. The roses peak in the third week of June. This is a 2011 photo from my archives.<br />

On June 1, the City Daily Photo bloggers will show photographs on the subject of "garden," as part of a full year plan to showcase specified parts of their cities on the first day of each month.</div>

Late last month Paulo Camacho's Funchal Daily Photo celebrated its eleventh anniversary. The city of Funchal, is the capital of Madeira Island, known as the "Pearl of the Atlantic". Madeira is a Portuguese island, off the coast of Morocco. It is backed by hills, and known for its harbor, gardens and Madeira wine cellars. The centuries-old Funchal Cathedral, which mixes Gothic and Romanesque styles, is notable for its carved wooden ceiling. Fronting the harbor is the São Tiago Fortress, built in the 1600s. It now houses the Contemporary Art Museum, with a large collection of Portuguese works.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
In late April 2010, the first post appeared in Hull and Hereabouts. The blog about this large port city in Yorkshire began neutrally enough. In time the semi-anonymous blogger who informs us about Hull began showing his prickly side. For example, "Hull City Council, in my own personal experience, is not fit to pick up the litter off the streets let alone be entrusted with the education of its young people." Or, here is a riff on the subject of a Catholic officer carrying a staff: "It's all really quite silly, this quasi pagan vesting authority into a stick (God's rod; the phallic imagery is clear, is it not or is that just me?) but then you see it popping up all over place not least in our Parliament and town councils with their fancy maces which have to be present before any business can be carried out. Parliament even has its own verger, Black Rod, by royal appointment. All utterly ridiculous or verging on it."<br />
<br />
Hey, a regular bit of irreverence can be fun, so long as you have some honey to mix with it. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The theme for April 1 is "School."<br />
<br />
There was an interesting school in the small rural town of Canterbury, Connecticut. Prudence Crandall operated a school for girls. In 1832, a young black girl asked Ms. Crandall to educate her. Ms. Crandall admitted her to the school, creating a controversy. The parents of all the white girls removed them from the school, so Ms. Crandall had to close the school. When it reopened, it became a school for black girls. Soon 20 African American girls from up and down the East Coast attended the school.<br />
<br />
Controversy continued. The State of Connecticut enacted The Black Law, prohibiting a school from admitting African American students without permission from the town. A lawsuit was filed. The school eventually won in the Connecticut Supreme Court, but the situation was still dangerous. In 1834 Prudence Crandall closed her school and moved away. The Black Law was repealed in 1838. Many years later the Connecticut legislature attempted to compensate Ms. Crandall by granting her a small pension. The school is now a museum.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
RedPat began blogging modestly enough on March 4, 2010.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Not sure how this will work but will try to post photos etc occasionally." That was it. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Oh, and she also modestly titled her blog "Occasional Toronto." Confidence was not RedPat's strong suit. Her next post read, "Still figuring things out! Trying to make the type a wee bit larger." And the next day, "Do you think that this type is too large?"</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We are pleased to report that RedPat did in fact figure it out. AND, for her, "Occasional" seems to mean "every blessed day!!!!!" Yes, from her modest start in March of 2010 through today, REDPAT HAS NOT MISSED A SINGLE DAY OF POSTING. We have come to know the thriving and growing city of Toronto well through her eyes.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thank you, RedPat. Well done.</div>

"The Dreckly Kid" is the nom de plume of a Cornish blogger who began Plymouth Daily Photo nine years ago, on February 11, 2011. Most appropriate for a month in which the theme has been "Streetscape," The Dreckly Kid's fist post was both a streetscape and a waterfront scene.</div>

His blog post told us that in the past, Plymouth's Sutton Harbour was home to an important fishing fleet and a wide range of commercial maritime activity, and its quays were busy with warehouses, processing and repair facilities. Nowadays it is home to a major marina complex and its quays are lined with apartments and a bewildering range of restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs. Here is a more recent photo.</div>

In Naples, Florida, the heat and summer rains lead to rapid, lush growth. In some older parts of the city, trees have grown together to form a shady canopy. This is 18th Street South in Naples. </div>

For ten years -- starting on January 1, 2010 -- <a href="https://merryatsyracuse.blogspot.com/">Merry@Syracuse</a> has documented her upper New York environs just about every day. Text is rare, and Merry doesn't cultivate many followers, nor does she tell anything about herself. But, she is metronomically consistent. It is worth a visit. Thanks for being such a consistent member of the City Daily Photo community.</div>

On September 6, 2007, Michelle started a photo blog as an excuse to ‘take photos’ and also ‘learn WordPress.’ Thus was born <a href="https://www.christchurchdailyphoto.com/">Christchurch Daily Photo</a>, still going strong more than a dozen years later. Three years into the life of her blog, Christchurch suffered severe damage from an earthquake, posing a dilemma for Michelle. Her solution was not to focus on the damage, but, rather, on the recovery. Michelle seems like a wise woman.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Michelle is a Christchurch website designer and amateur photographer living in Christchurch, New Zealand. Take a look and say 'congratulations!'</div>

The theme for December is "Rainbow." So many ways to illustrate that theme. For this announcement, let's go with a traditional rainbow, the one that greeted me as I disembarked from a week cruising the Greek islands. How will you illustrate "Rainbow" on December 1?</div>

Eleven years ago last week, Mary Ann began showing photos of Blacksburg, Virginia, to the world. Blacksburg is a pretty town in the Shenandoah mountains. It is home to Virginia Tech.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mary Ann doesn't tell us much about herself. She began her blog with this simple photo of an autumn day in southern Virginia. Well done, Mary Ann.</div>

I've never really understood why rust is called "red" when clearly it is very brown. Brown isn't a colour that immediately conjures bright happy thoughts, but the more one thinks about it, the more warm and fuzzy it becomes.<br />
<br />
Your challenge on November the first is to participate in our <a href="http://cdpbthemeday.blogspot.com/">Theme Day </a>"Brown", without posting a photo of anything rusty!bitingmidgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12593806233011328620noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8332949539195589459.post-29776772893039169092019-10-03T14:30:00.000-05:002019-10-03T14:30:00.248-05:00A Decade of Consistency for Tilburg Daily Photo<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Peter van den Bessalaar began Tilburg Daily Photo in October 2009 after following Eric Tenen's Paris Daily Photo for a while. Peter has posted every day since then with an enviable consistency. Tilburg is a good-sized city in southern Netherlands, not far from Belgium. Thank you, Peter. </div>
